How to Prepare For Sperm Donation

Some clinics offer clear guidelines of what men who are planning to donate or provide sperm for IVF should take into consideration, whereas other clinics don't have any certain guidelines. We have compiled a list of suggestions from multiple clinics across multiple jurisdictions on local as well as international basis. Overall, we have collected the following recommendations: 

• Abstain from sexual activity for a minimum for 3 days, but no more than 7 days. Ejaculation the day before analysis may lead to a decrease of volume and number of sperm in ejaculate. More than seven days abstinence before the semen analysis can lead to the death of the mature sperm cells, which are capable to fertilization. Where it is intended to provide multiple samples the second sample may be provided 2 days after the first.
• Abstain from the use of alcohol or any other drugs (including “Spice”, marijuana) in any form in order to avoid a reduction in sperm motility, changing of their form and even death of sperm. 
• Abstain from strong black tea, coffee and smoking for some days before the test to improve the indicators of the ejaculate.
• Exclude fat, fried food that can reduce the total volume of the ejaculate and sperm motility. To improve sperm parameters it is useful to use plant foods rich in vitamins and fibre (fruits and vegetables), protein (lean meat, beef, chicken, rabbit), and dairy products. Also, to improve the process of sperm maturation in the testes it is important to use enough vitamins (especially vitamin C and zinc).
• Total hyperthermia negatively affects the development of sperm, because the optimal temperature for its maturation should be 1-2 degrees lower than normal body temperature (34-35 C). So it is not recommended to attend steam baths or saunas or to take a hot bath the day before the sperm is provided.

It is not recommended to provide the sperm:

• If you have a cold or acute respiratory viral infections with fever;
• In case of inflammatory processes in the organs of the urogenital system (urethritis, prostatitis);
• If you have infections and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Infections, such as brucellosis, gonorrhea, influenza, mumps, syphilis, tuberculosis and typhoid, can cause the testicles to atrophy and result in low sperm motility and low sperm count. STDs, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, can block the epididymis tubes, which leads to infertility.
• While taking antibiotics or antidepressants;
• When using anabolic steroids, which can lead to disruption of hormonal functions required for sperm production.
