Oral thrush, as known as oral candidiasis, is one of the most common yeast infections that occurs in babies, especially in ones who are younger than six (6) months old.
As for the symptoms, a baby with oral thrush might develop:
Oral thrush is usually caused by abnormal growth of a type of fungus called candida albicans. People naturally have candida in their digestive system and mouth, however, strong immune system and “good” bacteria manage to maintain it in order.
When the immune system is altered, the overgrowth of candida albicans occurs. The main reason why babies often encounter the infection is that their immune system is not fully developed.
Another main cause of oral thrush is related to antibiotics. Antibiotics kill so called “good” bacteria that keeps candida albicans from abnormal growth.
Oral thrush in babies usually goes away within 2 or 3 weeks. It is recommended to see your pediatrician in order to treat a baby with proper anti-fungal solutions.
