Ovarian Stimulation and Monitoring
Ovarian stimulation is one of the major steps of IVF process. It is usually preceded with a baseline pelvic ultrasound check-up which is then followed by hormone injections to recruit multiple eggs from your ovaries. Ovarian stimulation lasts about 10 days and is carried out under close monitoring for follicular development and hormonal levels. About three to five medical visits will be conducted to assess egg maturity and development. Once your follicles reach the ideal size, you will be ready for egg retrieval. In case you are in need of an egg donor, she will be the one getting ovarian stimulation.
Egg Retrieval and Fertilization
A special medication will be administered 36 hours prior to the egg retrieval. Transvaginal follicle aspiration is performed by trained physician via long, think needle under 15 minute general anesthesia. Follicules aspirated from each ovary are collected in test tubes followed by egg placement in an incubator. Obtained eggs are fertilized with sperm.
Embryo culture and Assessment
Embryos are usually cultured up to five days in a temperature-controlled incubator. They are evaluated for quality and development.
Embryo Transfer
Embryo transfer to uterus is usually performed on day three (when the embryo is at multicell stage) or day five (when the embryo is at blastocyst stage). There is no need for anesthesia. Number of embryos to be transferred is usually agreed in advance with you. Pregnancy test is usually scheduled 12 days after the transfer. Then the first pregnancy test is positive it is followed by ultrasound in two weeks for the final confirmation of fetus heart beat.
Things to Consider
IVF procedure is rarely associated with complications, although as with any medical treatment some medical complications may occur, such as : injury of bladder, bowel or blood vessels, bleeding from ovaries , infections. Use of stimulation medicines may cause Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome in less than one percent of women having egg retrieval with IVF and may lead to dehydration, fluid accumulation in the abdominal or lung cavities , blood clotting disorders.
Multiple gestation is more common in women with undergo IVF. The rate of having twins with IVF is approximately 25 percent and the rate of having three babies is approximately 5 percent.
