It's recommended to check your baby's weight regularly. Generally, babies should be weighted:
- Once a month up to six months;
- Every two months from six months to twelve months;
- Every three months after they become 1 year-old.
Usually, babies who are born after their due date weight more compared to ones born earlier.
General statistics
On average, healthy newborn babies double their birth weight by 4 months and triple it by their first birthday. A boy’s weight will triple in approximately thirteen months. A baby girl’s weight will triple in about fifteen months. However, all babies grow at their own individual pace.
First few weeks
Throughout first few weeks almost every newborn loses weight. This happens as breastfed babies usually receive only small amounts of colostrum for the first few days. However, after the first week from birth, a healthy baby should start to gain more weight than he/she lost.
If you notice that your baby is constantly losing weight without any obvious cause, please see a doctor.
