March 8 marks International Women's Day (IWD) which is celebrated around the world. This day upholds and honors women's achievements in social, economic, cultural and political aspects of life.
As for the historic background, Women’s Day was first observed in 1911. Within the second International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, a woman named Clara Zedkin proposed the idea of an International Women's Day. Thus, roots of the IWD lie in the labour movement. Throughout decades, different important historical dates recognized and celebrated women's day by marching for equal pay, right to vote and equality.
This year, the United Nations announced that the theme for International Women’s Day is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”
